It Can’t Happen Here, by Sinclair Lewis

At the time this work was first published, fascism was fast becoming in vogue right here in the United States. In the thirties, the book served as a warning to the American people, of what could happen to their individual liberties, if they were not careful.

Today, “The Beast of Fascism” has arrived and it is hungry! Though times have changed and circumstances might appear to be different, but it’s still the middle class that’s under siege. It’s still your constitutional rights that are at risk. And the power players involved, permeate not only the government but also other equally influential, bastions of power. Beware of the multinational corporation,  and especially beware of all of the major global technology companies whose agendas serve no moral imperative. Beware of the idealogue!

Literati Take-away Series, # 12

“Lewis draws upon a national heritage of individualistic and democratic values in order to redeem the country from fascism masquerading in a patriotic costume.” *

* Even though our countries democratic values have changed, say over the last forty or fifty years, this quote is as relevant to our middle-class today, as it was in the past. It was  from the book’s intro. written by Michael Meyer, PhD

Don’t be surprised if this work soon becomes banned! I wonder, are there any brave enlightened teachers, who would dare to make this book required reading for their students?
